1. The Beginning of Pioneering and the Birth of the Association (1960s – 1970s)
The immigration history of Korean Americans in the Wisconsin area began in the early to mid-1960s, as international students, medical professionals (doctors and nurses), and engineers started settling down one by one, centered around Milwaukee. Living in an unfamiliar environment with language and cultural barriers, the early immigrants felt a desperate need for a unifying community where they could support one another.
In response to this shared need, dedicated pioneering immigrants officially founded the Korean American Association of Milwaukee (KAAM) in 1968, electing Boobok Choi as the inaugural president. Since the area lacked a large commercial district unlike other major metropolitan cities, the successive presidents and early board members set aside their personal livelihoods, laying the foundation of the association solely out of a spirit of volunteerism. Entering the 1970s, aligning with the establishment of local Korean churches, the association truly became a warm gathering place and a dependable pillar for the immigrant community.

2. Preserving Cultural Roots and Unifying the Korean Community (1980s – 1990s)
As immigrant families grew and the younger generation emerged, the role of KAAM became increasingly vital. To ensure that the next generation growing up on American soil maintained their identity as Koreans, KAAM actively supported the Korean School of Milwaukee. The association also regularly hosted traditional cultural events, including Lunar New Year celebrations, Chuseok (Harvest Festival) gatherings, and the annual Liberation Day Joint Picnic, which brought together local congregations and community members alike.
During this era, the association served as a heartwarming hub where compatriots scattered across Southeastern Wisconsin could gather a few times a year to share the warmth of home and look after one another.

3. Leaping into Mainstream Society and Connecting Generations (2000s – Present)
Over the span of more than half a century, KAAM has grown beyond internal solidarity to become a deeply respected community within mainstream American society. One of the most prideful legacies of the association is ‘Community Service Day.’ Board members and volunteers regularly visit the underserved and low-income neighbors in downtown Milwaukee to distribute meals and daily necessities, widely sharing the warmth and values of the Korean community with local society.
Furthermore, the association takes the lead in expanding our shared heritage beyond bloodlines and generations by sponsoring annual cultural outreach events that invite local Korean American adoptive families to experience traditional Korean culture.
Today, building upon over 50 years of proud history, the Korean American Association of Milwaukee honors the dedication of the first-generation immigrants while nurturing future leaders. It continues to fully carry out its mission as an advocate for the rights and interests of Korean Americans in Wisconsin and as a vital bridge to mainstream society.
